KNEE PADDING in prone patients

PADDING OF PRONE PATIENTS: Humans were not meant to lay prone for extended periods of time. Since the majority of prone cases are neurosurgical, neuroanesthesiologist have significant experience in padding these patients.

Simple foam

Open cell foam commonly used for shorter cases. One of the cheaper options.

High Quality Foam

High quality compressible foam and memory foam (often used for liposuction) can be used for padding. In older patients, these types of foam are usually used in conjuction with other padding material.

Examples include Reston (3M)and Lipofoam.

Pillow

In short case, the pillows can be used to protect the knees.

Moldable pillow

Also known as fluidized positioning devices, these devices can be used to periodically reposition body parts during longer case. They are not as soft as foam but distribute pressure evenly.

Examples include Z-Flo.

Padded dressing

Padded dressings have an adhesive and are also perforated to promote air circulation. These devices are thin and so are often used in conjunction with other padding material.

Examples include Allevyn and Mepilex.
